Kalu Ganga Reservoir Project
Kalu Ganga, a tributary river of Aban Ganga flowing through the Central Province of the country, is to be harnessed by this project estimated at Rs. 13 Billion, for irrigation and hydro power. With the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau of Sri Lanka as the Consultant, this project was launched in April 2014, and is expected to be completed by December 2018.
Impounded by a 575 m long rock-fill clay cored dam and a 720 m long saddle dam, the Kaluganga Reservoir will hold 248 MCM of water. As direct benefits, the reservoir is expected to annually feed 100 MCM of water to the Moragahakanda reservoir, irrigate 4,000 Ha of land for cultivation and provide potable water to the population of the area. The hydro power potential of this impounding is targeted to be harnessed in the future.
