Renewable Energy Demonstration Centre
Right bank main canal of the Udawalawe irrigation project conveys water at about 15 m3/s with a head loss of 6.5 m for over 250 days in a year indicating a hydro power potential of approximately 800 kW. Though the capital expenditure is high for a low head hydro power plant employing slow running turbines, this site is a potential candidate for a micro hydro power station.
The cover page depicts a graphic presentation of an innovative renewable energy demonstration facility coupled with a community center housing recreation, cafeteria and an auditorium at the above location. On the renewable energy side the facility is designed to feature hydro, wind solar, biomass and bio gas.
